 Formally known as the Parish Church of St Michael in the Benefice of St Michael with St Bartholomew - Great Lever, St Michaels was built in the 1850's, the church was consecrated on 29th September 1851.
Like so many of its contemporaries this church had to struggle for it's existence after the first waves of enthusiasm had died away: on April 7th 1852 the first rector wrote in his diary "Attended at church, no service for want of congregation".
Great Lever's Church was in the early days a chapel in the Great Lever Hall which served as a place of worship for over two hundred years and this was replaced by the "new" church in 1851.
The first Rector of the church probably lived at the Hall during the early part of his 48 years ministry in the parish
